In Arrival (2016) aliens come to Earth. Louise Banks is a linguist retained by the U.S. Army in hope of establishing contact. She ends up communicating with the octopus-like creatures through symbols. The aliens offer not just a message, but a gift with powerful consequences. Louise begins to have “memories” of a future which has not yet unfolded. She tries to protect the creatures from those on Earth who wish to destroy them.
